New research indicates that patients who come off new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using these drugs must be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to original mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
