EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
