Congress Passes Legislation to Release Epstein Files

The Senate on this Tuesday gave swift approval to legislation that will require the publication of investigative files associated with the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the lower house and a shift by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The White House gave in after an extended period of trying to delay the joint action involving a controversy that has dogged the president since his return to the White House.

Unanimous Approval in Both Chambers

Senators proceeded by consensus, which requires approval from each senator but does not require a individual voting process, accelerating the process. Hours earlier, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a massive majority.

“The American people have been patient long enough. Those affected have waited long enough,” Chuck Schumer stated in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before asking the Senate to adopt it by consent. “Reveal the truth. Let transparency reign.”

Presidential Signature

The bill next heads to Trump for his endorsement. Trump stated on the previous day that he would endorse the legislation.

Although the president has for months dismissed the uproar over the government’s handling of the Epstein case as a “false narrative”, he voiced approval for the House bill over the weekend, and stated he would give his assent if it is presented to him.

Response

Democrats, along with those affected and their supporters who were seated in a viewing area, applauded after the bill was passed. The sole “no” vote came from a GOP representative, who stated he was concerned the measure would make public identifying details of witnesses, those under scrutiny and others involved in the investigation.
