Around fifty cars have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Automobiles, walls and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they stated in a statement.

Police report they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.

The liquid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Officers then discovered multiple other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials say initial examinations indicate the substance was most likely blood from a person.

"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; officials are presently not informed of any harm in association with the incident," they commented.

Municipal representatives stated they were working "to resolve the incident" and have requested to the community for details.

A senior official said the vandalism left him stunned and needed to be addressed promptly.

"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing attack in 2020," he stated on online, referring to the murder of nine victims by a gunman focusing on people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
